Since life first appeared on Earth, it has evolved into a wide variety of forms through ecological and evolutionary processes, particularly in the ocean, where more than one-third of phyla are endemic. However, this diversity remains to be described and understood, as large parts of taxonomic diversity and species’ biology have yet to be discovered. Studying the biological mechanisms underlying the life of marine species is essential to understand the history of life and evolutionary processes, and to preserve ocean biodiversity. Investigating the diversity of biological mechanisms in marine biology will also help identify new molecular pathways, enzymes, and products that could benefit industry, health, and the environment in marine ecosystems.
