International call 2025 | Marine biology and ecology
Since life first appeared on Earth, it has evolved into a wide variety of forms through ecological and evolutionary processes, particularly in the ocean, where more than one-third of phyla are endemic. However, this diversity remains to be described and understood, as large parts of taxonomic diversity and species’ biology have yet to be discovered. Studying the biological mechanisms underlying the life of marine species is essential to understand the history of life and evolutionary processes, and to preserve ocean biodiversity. Investigating the diversity of biological mechanisms in marine biology will also help identify new molecular pathways, enzymes, and products that could benefit industry, health, and the environment in marine ecosystems.
Therefore, CNRS Biology and CNRS Ecology & Environment are launching a call for proposals to develop studies on marine species, with a focus on evolutionary mechanisms and interactions. The aim of this call is to foster and strengthen collaborations between CNRS Biology and CNRS Ecology & Environment laboratories and laboratories working on the Eastern Pacific Coast, specifically on the West Coast of Canada, the West Coast of the United States and Chile.
Projects from laboratories primarily affiliated to CNRS Biology and Ecology & Environment will be funded for two years with a budget of 15 k€ per year. Budgets should be dedicated to travel (in such cases, travel, and meeting expenses) and running costs necessary for the project (no salaries or allowances). Projects will be evaluated on their scientific novelty and the adequacy between the scientific question and the biological model examined. In addition, the rationale and need for collaboration must be clearly justified. The Principal Investigator (PI) in France will operate the funds for all participating laboratories.
