The CIRI, located in Lyon, France, is a joint research unit of the Lyon 1 University, Inserm, CNRS and ENS de Lyon, Jean Monnet University (UJM) and Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL) in partnership with VetAgro Sup and the Pasteur Institute.

The CIRI brings together scientific and medical research communities from complementary disciplinary backgrounds, including bacteriology, immunology, virology, epidemiology and ecology of infectious diseases. More than 400 people, researchers, faculty members, graduate students, engineers and technicians in 26 teams work together to the understanding the interactions between microbes and their hosts in order to better fight infectious and immune diseases.

Founded in 2013, the CIRI is Lyon’s key academic research institute in infectious diseases. The CIRI is located on the fertile ground of the Lyon-Gerland Bio-district, a site gathering numerous public and private laboratories. The CIRI has launched strong collaborations with international institutions as well as hospitals and biotech companies to conducts research projects that leads to top-level scientific and clinical publications, patent applications, public-private collaborations, and start-ups
creations. With its partners, the CIRI plays a particularly active part in regional and national initiatives in the field of fundamental and translational research in infectious diseases and host immune responses.


The missions of CIRI Director


The main missions of the Director are to develop a stimulating, collaborative, and innovative research environment, to push for bold and creative lines of research and to promote the CIRI at the highest international level.

The Director manages on day-to-day operation activities of the CIRI, including the oversight of financial, human resources and strategic activities. The Director benefits from the support of the management team, consisting of the CIRI Direction boards, Committees and Support services, that he/she is supervising.

The Director also deals with the institute stakeholders: local and national managing bodies (Inserm, CNRS, UCBLI, ENS de Lyon and UJM), hospitals (HCL), national and international partners, structures or institutions and local and national political bodies. He/she oversees the coordination of the demands for resources of the Institute and its evaluations.


The Candidate

The successful candidate will be an eminent, established career scientist with well-recognized achievements and international visibility in one of three main axes that compose the research in host-pathogen interactions in human infectious diseases at the CIRI: Bacteriology, Virology and Immunology.

In addition, the candidate will have shown strong organizational management leadership and be familiar with French and/or foreign research administration systems.
In case the candidate wishes to pursue cutting-edge research in his/her scientific field and to lead his/her own team at the CIRI, he/she will be allocated a specific laboratory space in a new building opened in 2022 and seed financial support.

Candidates holding an academic position at the CNRS, Inserm, University or equivalent top-level positions may apply or will be accompanied to obtain such a position.

The planned appointment date will be halfway of 2022-2026, in order to prepare the candidate to take over the management of the Institute starting on 1st January 2027 for a first five-year term. The date of integration into the Institute, ideally mid-2024, should allow a strong involvement in the establishment of the preparation of the CIRI next term project and a transition period with the present Director, François-Loïc Cosset.
